Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Ca 100 to 500 CE.
An exceptional Moche silver-alloy crown (headdress) from the North Coast of ancient Peru. Beautifully crafted with a wide band of silver that is decorated with two rows of disk-shaped dangles. The disks are attached via thin wires that loop through to the exterior and are secured on the back. This type of crown would have only been worn by the ruling elite; certainly a person of great importance. As is depicted in examples of Moche pottery, their rulers often wore elaborate crowns; however, they are typically depicted as a crescent-shaped (solar) headdress. This type of crown differs, not only for its unusual form but also for its elaborate ornamentation. This example has never been cleaned and is heavily oxidized with moderate to heavy green encrusted patina as would be expected. There are areas, mainly on the back that are void of encrustation and clearly shows the original silver metallic surface underneath.
A few dangles have been reattached and several have been replaced using modern wire.
Overall the crown appears intact, complete and near choice.
Displays impressively on a custom metal stand which is included. Ex. J. Behnkin estate of Atlanta, GA.
Crown is approx. 16" long x 1.75" tall. Approx 7" in diamater. 5" tall on the stand.
