Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1500 CE. Impressive Inca finial, finely carved from one piece of wood, intended to adorn a large staff. The carving is comprised of a likeness of a standing lord holding a staff in his right hand and a kero in his left hand. Look at the verso and you will see a playful monkey, revered for its cunning nature, hanging upside down, his hands/paws gripping the sides of the lord's head, his tail wrapped around the lord's headdress. Wonderful technique and rich iconography from the largest empire in Pre-Columbian America. Particularly poignant as the term "Inca" literally means ruler or lord in the indigenous Quechua language. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: 16 1/2"L.
